Technical Insight: What Makes Black Titanium “Black”?
Industrial black titanium is created by controlled air oxidation, forming a titanium oxide layer—typically TiO₂ (rutile phase)—which appears dark due to its light-absorbing, porous structure. In air at high temperatures (typically above 600 °C), titanium readily oxidizes, forming this oxide layer
Furthermore, research shows that anodic oxidation followed by heat treatment produces a sponge-like nanoporous rutile TiO₂ structure, which strongly absorbs light, resulting in a black appearance. Though our process utilizes heat-based air oxidation rather than vacuum anodization, the principle is related: a controlled oxide film creates the desired black finish.
